Helen Arlene Bonner was born June 1, 1929 in West Grove, Iowa (Davis
County), to Jack and Dorothy (Herbert) Saner. She grew up in
southern Iowa , one of 14 children. She attended numerous country
schools as her dad was a coal miner, so they moved frequently. She
helped her parents raise her younger siblings. Helen met her future
husband Virgil Bonner in Eldon Iowa.
Helen was united in marriage by Pastor Forbes at the church
parsonage, to Virgil L. Bonner on Dec. 19, 1951 in Eldon, IA They
raised their family in Ottumwa, IA, where they lived until 1973
when
Virgil was transferred to the Estherville Morrell's plant, where
they have lived since. Helen was a loving wife and mother devoting
her life to raising her children. She was active attending their
activities from dance to ball games. She continued to follow her
7
grandchildren and 2 great grand-children's activities, rarely missing
an event until her health began to fail. She was proudly known
around town as 'Grandma Bonner.' Helen was a member of the HFH
Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, Legion Auxiliary, Weight Watchers, TOPPS,
Monday afternoon Bowling League. She delivered Meals on Wheels and
enjoyed square dancing and supporting 'Family Ties' Relay For Life
Team. Helen was well known for all the salads she made over the
years at the VFW. She enjoyed going for walks with her good friend
Hazel Hood and never seemed to miss a family reunion, as family
was
always her number one priority. She enjoyed crocheting, puzzles
and
working on crafts. Helen will truly be missed by all who were
blessed to have known her.
